Abstract

This study focused on the flooding problem in the vicinity of a bridge along the National Highway in Bay, Laguna. During heavy rains, severe flooding is typically experienced upstream of the bridge. The goal of this study is to investigate the flow characteristics of Calo, River by simulating it in a hydraulic model and to propose solutions to the flooding problem. Hydrologic Engineering Center-River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) was used in creating the hydraulic model of Calo River. Results of the initial simulation of the model showed that most parts of the study reach will be inundated when a 50-year rainfall event occurs. Various river channelization techniques were then applied to improve the flow capacity of the river cross-sections. Finally, after running several simulations, a final solution was proposed, which includes removing the existing weir or lowering its crest elevation, lining the sides with grouted stone riprap, standardizing the bed slopes, and converting some of the cross-sections into trapezoidal channels.
