Abstract

The study aimed to understand the flow behavior of Carlo river and identify causes of flooding in its vicinity, especially in the upstream of Bridge 1 located at Brgy. Maitim, Bay, Laguna. A hydraulic model of the river was created using HEC-RAS. The model requires inputs mainly cross sections and flow data. Hydrographic survey was done to attain cross section measurements. Flow data were determined through hydrologic modeling of the catchment using NRCS (SCS) Model and applying Huff's distribution to describe the temporal distribution of the design storms. The flow was found to range from 30m³/s for 5-year event to 105m³s for 100-year event. The HEC-RAS model was created using the gathered cross sections, flow and other miscellaneous data. The hydraulic model was used to simulate different flows. Result of the simulation includes water surface profiles. The profiles were examined and it was found out that the upstream of Bridge 1 is quickly flooded compared to the other portions of the river. This may due to the existing piers under the bridge, weeds and grasses and mild slope of the river. The piers choke the flow increasing the water level in the upstream in order to satisfy continuity of flow. The weeds and grasses and mild slope of the river causes low flow velocity which results to high flow depth.
