Abstract
A 42-day feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of supplementing diets with different levels of betaine on the performance of broilers. A total of 200 eight day-old chicks of Cobb-strain were used in the study. Three treatments were randomly allotted to 20 cages following a completely randomized design (CRD). Broilers in control were fed with basal starter and finisher diets while those in betaine level 1 and betaine level treatments were fed basal diets supplemented with betaine replacing the amount of dl-methionine in the diet. There was no significant difference observed in the feed intake of birds in all periods. There was a significant difference (p<0.05) observed in the live weight gain of birds in all periods, birds fed with full betaine had the lowest weight gain in all periods. There was no significant diffence observed in the feed efficiency of birds in all periods. The income over feed and chicks cost (IOFCC) was improved. The study showed that 50% synthetic dl-methionine can be substituted by betaine, full replacement of dl-methionine with betaine did not improved the performance of broiler chickens.
