Abstract

The Rock goby, Glossogobius celebius, is an endemic, flat head species which thrives in regions near the Celebes Sea. Information on its reproductive biology is specifically needed in spawning and conservation studies. G. celebius were sampled in Pagbilao, Quezon in July 2009 to evaluate sexual dimorphism and gonadal development. A total of twenty (20) individuals ranging from 60-100 mm TL were collected and preserved in 10% formalin. Morphomeristic analysis was conducted. Bivariate correlation analyses of morphometric data revealed that more characters were in proportion to the rest of the measurements in females as compared to males. Sexual dimorphism was observed upon examination of the genital papilla. In males, it was thin, pointed and spotted while in females it was round, w-shaped with no distinct coloration. Most of the ovaries contained vitellogenic oocytes with some atresia. This is an indication that samples were collected near the spawning season. The lobular testis of males showed that half of the samples contain all spermatogenic stages where as the other half only has spermatogonia. Males are either spawning capable, spawning or immature during this season. Further studies must be conducted to record the entire reproductive cycle, determine the exact spawning season and to measure fecundity in relation to different parameters.
