Abstract

The major practice was conducted at The Orchard Golf and Country Club, Dasmariñas, Cavite from April to May 2014. The objective is for the student to learn through participation and observation of the different practices in tree maintenance operations at the Player course with an area of 40.5 hectares. An inventory of the actual number of trees at the study site was accomplished by the student. The results showed that Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) and Mango (Mangifera indica) are the dominant species at the site. Some of the mango trees underwent tree surgery using polyurethane foam as the filling material. A simple cost analysis of the regular monthly activity for tree maintenance operation was prepared. Five personnel were able to prune 35 trees a day with most of the pruning method used were crown lifting, crown raising and water sprout removal. The total cost per day summed up to Php 11,450.87 for the 35 trees which approximately cost Php 330.00 per tree. Problems encountered during the major practice were identified and recommendations were given such as wearing of complete personal protective equipment, substituting cement for foam in tree surgery, regular nutrient management preferably the application of organic soil conditioner or compost and the use of root barrier next time they will plant tree near utility lines. The student realized that proper and good tree maintenance practices are important for the health of the tree and prevent possible tree failure. Having healthy trees in the landscape creates and promotes environment friendly and aesthetically pleasing surrounding.
