Abstract

In creating a landscape design, public participation is considered a useful aid in coming up with the final output. The landscape design does not solely contain the ideas of the designer, but more importantly, those of the users of the site. A public open green space is intended for the benefits of the general public, hence, their participation in the design process is essential. In this study, a proposed landscape design for the newly-built attraction in the UPLB campus called Nihon Koen (Japanese Park) was created by the combined ideas of the designer as well as the respondents. Through a survey questionnaire, the insights and suggestions were obtained from the people who use the area and their constraints about the site were addressed during the design process. Eighty-one respondents believed that it is necessary to create a landscape design for Nihon Koen primarily for the reason to provide comfort for the people using the area while the remaining 19 respondents believed that it is not necessary since they think that the landscape is already beautiful. A Japanese-themed landscape design was created that complemented the main structures in the site which is the torii and the pathwalk. A comprehensive and detailed inventory and analysis of the area was done to create the sheet maps of the design. While considering the suggestions and comments of the respondents, the final landscape design was created by also evaluating the functionality, aesthetic characteristics, and availability of the resources specifically the plants to be used. The proposed landscape design was estimated to cost Php 155,900.00 which included the softscapes and the labor cost for the implementation. Maintenance procedures were also presented in order to keep the landscape beautiful and functional.
