Abstract

The Food Science and Technology practicum was conducted at Regional Standards and Testing laboratory, Department of Science and Technology Region IV-A, Jamboree Road, Timugan, Los Baños, Laguna from April to May 2014 for 160 hours/20 days/weeks. The trainee spent her first week of training in the RSTL. Office. The remaining weeks were used for her microbiology training, followed by the food chemistry training and lastly in the water chemistry training. In the microbiology laboratory, the trainee assisted in media reagent and sample preparation, bacteriological examinations in water and wastewaters and several microbiological analysis for foods. In the food chemistry laboratory, she assisted in the mineral determination by atomic absorption spectroscopy, protein determination by semi-micro Kjeldahl method, pH determination and moisture determination by air-oven method. For the water chemistry Laboratory, she assisted in the following analysis: Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen demand (Open and closed reflux method), Oil and Grease, Total Suspended solids (TSS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Determination of Ammonia and Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen, Nitrate Determination and Flouride Determination.
