Abstract

The trainee conducted her practicum in the Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory (RSTL) of the Department of Science and Technology Region IV-A in a period of 240 hours from April 25 to June 4, 2014. The laboratory is located at Brgy. Timugan, Los Baños, Laguna. Training covered both microbiological and chemical testing of food and water sample. The training in the microbiological laboratory covered tests for food and water samples namely: potability of water, determination of yeast and molds, coliforms, heterotrophic and aerobic plate count. In the chemical testing laboratory, the tests covered for food samples were protein analysis, metal analyses using atomic absorption spectrophotometer and moisture content determination. Meanwhile, for the water and wastewater samples, tests namely chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia nitrogen content determination, and total phosphorus content. The trainee learned and enhanced laboratory techniques and methods which were conducted in the testing laboratory with the incorporation of the things learned inside the laboratory. Also, RSTL had provided the trainee a worthwhile and educational training which made the trainee well-equipped for the future career she is going to pursue someday.
