Abstract

The major practice, conducted from May 2010 to February 2011, sought to engage the student to participate and experience firsthand the maintenance operations of RPG Gardens. RPG Gardens has an average area of 600 square meters, of which 300 square meters is allotted for the bonsai collection having over 100 dwarfed trees. The student practitioner performed and observed the various bonsai maintenance activities which include watering, pruning, wiring, nutrient management, pest management, mulching and cleaning in the site. The plant species of the collection were evaluated based on their appearance and cultural requirements. A plant catalogue was created based on these observations. Problems observed during the major practice in the site such as plant health, pest occurrence, lack of facilities and lack of security in the area were addressed. Recommendations based on best known practices were given. This report presents a comprehensive documentation and evaluation of the garden‟s bonsai maintenance operations that may serve as guide to future maintenance personnel and bonsai enthusiasts.
