Abstract

Field practice was conducted at Central Azucarera Don Pedro, Inc. (CADPI) in Nasugbu, Batangas which aims for the students to acquire firsthand knowledge and experience in raw sugar manufacturing and refining. The students calculated the recovery of raw and refined sugar based from the parameters used in the factory. The recovery of CADPI were 1.71 piculs of raw sugar per ton cane milled and 1.20 L-kg of refined sugar per picul of raw sugar used. Also, the energy requirement of the factory to operate were calculated based from the bagasse consumption. The bagasse consumption of CADPI was 112.93% of the amount of bagasse they could produce. In addition to the field practice, a special problem regarding the emission and dispersion of carbon dioxide (CO2) was included. It aims to show the dispersion of CO2 coming from CADPI during the operation in different condition. The concentration of CO2 from the dispersion was compared to the actual concentration of CO2 from the atmosphere to determine the effect of the emission of CADPI. Gaussian plume dispersion model was used to determine the area of dispersion by plotting the concentration in a contour graph using PTC MathCad 15.0 (trial version). The result of dispersion does not reach the area outside the premises of CADPI. Also, the concentration of CO2 emitted does not show high impact to the air quality.
