Abstract

The raw sugar manufacture and refinery practice at Central Azucarera Don Pedro, Inc. (CADPI) involved the exposure to different factory processes that are included in the production in the raw and refined sugar. The different stations and parts necessary for producing the sugar as well as the by-products of the processes were identified and explained. Other departments that are not directly involved in the processes but still play a role in the factory are also discusses such as the Quality Control Department, Boilers Department and the Environmental Management and Safety Department. Aside from the factory operations and departments, a special topic was discussed that may present benefits to the factory. Since scaling is a major problem in the evaporators in the raw sugar manufacture, electrocoagulation of the clarified juice was proposed in order to minimize the formation of scales inside the evaporators. This process can remove the scale-forming components present in the clarified juice. Moreover, this would increase the efficiency of the evaporation process of the factory and can replace the current cleaning method of evaporators which is chemical cleaning by caustic soda.
