Abstract

Optimization and kinetics of the hydrolysis of copra meal using aqueous hydrochloric acid were studied. The parameters optimized were (1) acid concentration (5%, 20%, 35% by mass HCl), (2) temperature (30oC, 50oC, 70oC), (3) pre-treatment (with oven – drying and without oven - drying). A preliminary experiment was conducted to determine the reaction time and it was found out to be twelve hours. The reducing sugars produced, specifically mannose, were analyzed by the DNS method using mannose as the standard. It was found out that pre- treating the meal through (oven-drying has a significant effect on the overall production of the reducing sugars. The reducing sugar yield of copra meal that had undergone oven – drying was 17.5074 mg sugar/mg copra meal while that without oven –drying was only 10.9399 mg sugar/mg copra meal. The optimum conditions for the hydrolysis of copra meal were 5% HCl: 70o C: with oven - drying. The rate order of the kinetics study of the acid hydrolysis of copra meal was first –order with rate constant and R2 equal to 0.0381 hr-1 and 0.9616, respectively.
