Abstract
A field practice in CADPI was done to observe actual operations and process inside a raw sugar factory and refinery. Different unit operations are involved in raw and refined sugar manufacture. A special topic about the evaluation of syrup clarification was done. The study aimed to compare the quality of syrup before and after syrup clarification, to determine the importance of syrup clarification on the overall process of sugar produced. Data from crop years 2011-2012 and 2013-2014 were used in this study. This data includes qualities of the syrup, process materials (massecuite), final products(raw sugar and final molasses) in terms of brix, pol, pH, apparent purity, turbidity and color. One-tailed t-test was used on the collected data. Based on the results, the color and turbidity of syrup decreased significantly after clarification. But the qualities of raw sugar were not improved by syrup clarification. Thus, it is best to remove syrup clarification.
