Abstract

The study was conducted to determine the effect of thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) powder on the growth performance of starter pigs,on the average daily gain in weight of the animals, the daily feed intake, feed efficiency and feed cost efficiency. The study also aimed to identify any economic effect of adding thyme powder to the existing feed that is used in the farm. The 38-dayfeeding trialinvolved the use of 180 heads of starter pigs. The animals were distributed randomly and were assigned to three different dietary treatments (1) control feed (commercial feed), (2) control + 0.10% thyme powder, and (3) control + 0.20% thyme powder. Each of the treatments had 4 replicates and each of the replicates used fifteen pigs. The pigs were fed with their respective treatments and water was provided ad libitum. The average daily gain, average daily feed intake and feed efficiency did not vary significantly among treatments. Feed cost efficiency was not also significantly difference among treatments. It is highly recommended to use more animals to confirm the result of the experiment. It is also recommended to conduct the test on animals under different growth stages.
