Abstract
Corn is one of the most important grains in the country, not only for human but also for animals. Due to the fact that 20% of the Filipinos use corn by-products (corn grits) as the staple food next to rice, the Philippines has increased number of corn milling companies. Another factor is the increasing demand of feeds for the livestock industry. Milling operation in the country uses machines and equipment like peeler, grinder, dehuller, storage bins, conveyors, baggers, feeders and silos. Although milling operation is important in the country, it must be noted that storage of raw materials and by-products are also significant to the milling industry. Storing of raw materials in silos or bins reduces damage and prolongs the shelf-life of corn. Proper aeration and temperature monitoring of silo must be followed. To lengthen the shelf-life of by-products, same rules must also be pursued in the warehouse. In Davao Solar Best Corporation, some of the important principles and standards in storage operation have not been followed. Those standards are temperature monitoring, having aeration system on both silos and warehouse, and proper sanitation. Since the company did not follow these standards, the quality of raw and finished products is affected. With the use of advance technology in materials handling, mechanized production, proper maintenance, monitoring and sanitation, and good relationship with the workers, the milling industry will be more efficient in producing the demand products. This paper document of the field practice done in Davao Solar Best Corporation. The milling and storage operations are discussed in this paper however, the focus is on storage operation done in the company. Activities such as quality control, receiving and unloading of grains, materials handling equipment used and plant background are covered in this paper. Problems observed in the company and the corresponding recommendations have been added.
