Abstract
Propolis is a chemically complex bee product containing resins and materials collected from buds and exudates of plants. Propolis samples of Philippine stingless bee Trigona biroi Friese were collected from Alaminos, Laguna. Extraction of fresh propolis with 70% ethanol and its subsequent fractionation showed that propolis contains 10.01% ethanol extractable material while the ethanol extract contains 2.99% hexane soluble fractions (HF) and 39.39% dichloromethane soluble fractions (DF). Majority of the ethanol extract components remained in the aqueous fraction. The melting temperature of propolis and dried residues from ethanol extraction was 85 oC and 60-65 oC, respectively. Softening of propolis and dried residues started at 40-45 oC. The refractive index of the ethanol fraction (AQ), HF and DF were 1.349 ± 0.001, 1.359 ± 0.001 and 1.361 ± 0.001, respectively. The phenolic content of AQ, HF and DF calculated as gallic acid equivalent (mg GAE/100g), were 2413 ± 34.0, 109 ± 2.0 and 744 ± 11.1, respectively. NMR analysis indicated that DF consists mainly of alkanes. GC-MS showed that HF consists mainly of 1- heptatriacotanol, tetratetracontane and nonadecane.
