Abstract
The digital photometric method using dichromate was used to determine the concentration of ethanol in commercial products such as CasinoTM alcohol and JT BakerTM reagent grade ethanol and of aspirin in BaeyerTM product. This was done using 16.1 MP digital camera and RGB Analysis of Color. Potassium permanganate was used for optimization. The concentration of CasinoTM alcohol was tested and 67.7±0.58% ABV was obtained using %L plot 68.84±1.34% ABV was obtained with a* plot, and 59.28±1.30% ABV was obtained with b* plot which is compared with spectrophotometric value of 68.64±0.19%. The 96% JT Baker reagent grade ethanol and 97.28±0.83% ABV was obtained using %L plot, 99.94±0.34% ABV was obtained with a* plot, while 92.64±1.31% ABV was obtained with b* plot which is compared with spectrophotometric value of 95.16±0.28%. The 0.16 mg/mL aliquot of 1-mg/mL aspirin solution gave 0.293±0.017 mg/mL using %L plot, 0.174±0.098 mg/mL using a*plot, and 0.171±0.025 mg/mL using b* plot which is compared with spectrophotometric value of 0.1701±0.0025 mg/mL. The 0.25 mg/mL aliquot of 1-mg/mL aspirin solution gave 0.256±0.017 mg/mL using %L plot, 0.255±0.105 mg/mL using a*plot, and 0.260±0.025 mg/mL using b* plot which is compared with spectrophotometric value of 0.2587±0.0037 mg/mL. The digital photometry done for checking ethanol concentration and aspirin concentration using dichromate were proven as valid and can be repeated by t-test at 99.9 % confidence level.
