Abstract

Photocatalytic degradation of biodiesel wastewater was investigated using TiO₂ catalyst under artificial ultraviolet radiation. Parametric and optimization studies were conducted on the effects of initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) and TiO₂ catalyst loading on COD level reduction in the wastewater. Results of the parametric study have indicated positive correlations for COD reduction in wastewater in terms of initial COD and TiO₂ catalyst load. A 48% reduction was achieved at an initial COD of 33,370ppm and a catalyst load of 3g/L. A 2² full factorial design of experiment was implemented for the optimization study. At 95% confidence level, ANOVA tests have indicated that catalyst load and interaction effects between catalyst load initial COD were the most significant factors influencing percent COD reduction in biodiesel wastewater.
