Abstract
Pervaporation is a membrane process that can be combined with distillation to overcome the azeotropic limitations. In this study. it was desired to produce absolute ethanol from a simulated distillation product with different concentrations by pervaporation (at 28ºC and 5 inHg Vacuum pressure) using Diacap® α-Polysulfone membrane, which is hydrophobic polymetric membrane. It was determined that the product concentration, permeate flux, separation factor (selectivity) and pervaporation separation index increased as the ethanol concentration of the feed increased. The highest concentration of the permeate produced was 96.70% (v/v) which is slightly greater than the azeotropic concentration of ethanol (96%). The permeate flux, separation factor and pervaporation separation index ranged from 7.05 to 50.00mL/min-m², 0.85to 2.02, and 6.81 to 91.30 mL/min-m², respectively. Additional pervaporation runs were done at 175mL/min flow rate and 1.25 inHg permeate pressure to determine the effect of lower feed flow rate and permeate pressure. The overall pervaporation performance of the membrane increased in the new operating condition.
