Abstract
Polyaniline (PAni) was fabricated using three-step electropolymerization technique. Pencil graphite as electrodes were immersed in an aqueous and homogeneous solution of 0.5 M aniline and 1.0 M H2SO4. Three-step electropolymerization of PAni was carried out by applying three bias currents (0.06 mA, 0.03 mA, 0.015 mA) at different durations in succession. SEM images showed sphere-like particles of the electropolymerized PAni. Diameter sizes varied from 175nm to 850nm depending on the electropolymerization time. The FTIR spectra before and after exposure to ammonia showed the transformation of PAni from Emeraldine salt to base. It was observed that the electrical response of sample to ammonia increases as electropolymerization increases at each current. Exposure to ammonia resulted to a decrease in electrical response using the Wheatstone Bridge (WB) circuit. Electrical response is measured by taking the voltage across the bridge in the WB circuit. Samples prepared at 25 min-50 min-50 min deposition time produced the highest electrical response to ammonia while the lowest response was at sample prepared at 5 min-10 min-10 min.
