Abstract
In this study, the chloride ion infiltration in Type I and Type IP cement mortars exposed to laboratory simulated tidal conditions was investigated. The influence of type of cement, curing time, and w/c ratio on chloride ion penetration was considered. Type I and Type IP mortar specimens with different w/c ratios (0.55, 0.6, and 0.65) and curing [periods (7 and 28 days) were exposed to laboratory simulated sea tidal zone condition using 3% NaCI solution for 30 and 60 days. The degree of chloride penetration on the mortar specimens was measured using AgNo3 -based colorimetric method. Results from the experiment showed that type IP mortars had better chloride penetration resistance at all w/c ratios an curing periods and the chloride penetration in all of the specimens increased with w/c ratio. Furthermore, it was found out that for mortars cured for shorter periods, w/c ratio has a higher influence on improving the resistance of mortar against chloride attacks. However for longer curing periods, aside from w/c, the type of cement also greatly influenced the improvement on the chloride penetration resistance. Thus it can be deduced that switching from Type I to Type IP cement will efficiently yield an improvement in chloride resistance of mortar provided that long curing is considered.
