Abstract

Photodegradation catalyzed by titanium dioxide has been proven to be effective in reducing organic pollutants in water thus this study was conducted to determine if it still holds for the jatropha biodiesel wastewater where the titanium dioxide is in pellet form.Solidification of titanium dioxide was done to produce pellets via extrusion using cement and Plaster of Paris as test binders. The key parameters for comparison was the chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction. Reduction was achieved and recorded to decrease in the treatment with cement pellets. The Plaster of Paris pellets had increased COD readings. The cement pellets were characterized in terms of bulk density, moisture content, solubility, and dimensions. Also, it was found out that the binder concentration does not affect the photodegradation. The reusability of the pelletized titania was also studied. The kinetic parameters such as order of reaction and the rate constant were also determined. Further investigation was then recommended especially regarding optimization binder material and preparation, and economics.
