Abstract
Biofuels Act of 2006 (RA 9367) requires all bioethanol blended gasoline shall contain a minimum of five percent bioethanol fuel by volume. However, there is a need for lowering the cost of production. Pervaporation is one of the recent technologies in coping with this problem. It is a process of liquid separation using membranes which act as a separating barrier for the process. When the membrane and the liquid mixture come into contact, one of the components can be removed from the mixture due to its affinity and diffusivity in the membrane. The diluted ethanol solution (1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% v/v) was passed through of Diacap α-polysulfone dialysis membrane using a vacuum pump. Different feed concentration(1%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% v/v) and vacuum pressure (1 in Hg, 2 in Hg, 3 in Hg, 4 in Hg and 5 in Hg) were employed in determining their effect on the permeate flux and selectivity of the membrane. It was observed that as the feed concentration increased, the selectivity of the membrane decreased and the permeate flux increased. The same observation was obtained when the vacuum pressure was increased. The highest percent increase obtained was 105% increase when 2% feed concentration permeated as 4.22%.
