Abstract
Agricultural sustainability and development have become a high priority in scientific research and on policy agenda. However, measuring the sustainability of an agricultural system has long been debated because of the difficulty of defining appropriate set of indicators for sustainable development. Sustainable assessment of farming and the environmental framework, a tool that considers the environment, economic and social pillars of agricultural system was adapted and the use in the study to assess the sustainability of the vegetable-based agricultural system in the uplands of Barangay Abo and Bukal, Nagcarlan, Laguna. Secondary data was reviewed and analyzed to describe and identify the sustainability indicators. Farming practices and perceptions of farmers and key informants were gathered through survey and interviews. The vegetable-based agricultural system in the stud area was assessed to be sustainable because they practice Gliricidia trellis system that reduces soil erosion and enrich the soil through application of Gliricidia trimmings as green manures. However, the use of chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides in tomato and snap beans production by farmers possible contributed to reduction of its ecological soundness and thus sustainability. The organic way of farming which minimizes use of chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides may increase sustainability of the vegetable-based agricultural system.
