Abstract

This major practice was conducted at the Bayer Cropscience Research Center in Brgy. Masiit, Calauan, Laguna. The focus was on management and research operations in rice biological control trials on sheath blight and rice blast diseases caused by Rhizoctonia solani and Pyricularia oryzae, respectively. Specific activities included field trial area preparation and maintenance, sheath blight pathogenicity test, mass production of R. solani and P. oryzae inocula, and inoculation. A fungicide assay was also conducted to test a biofungicide, Bacillus subtilis QST 713 against R. solani in vitro. This test showed that the biofungicide was effective against R. solani at half, full and double recommended rates indicating it as potential biological control agent against the sheath blight pathogen. Management and research operations for biological control trials were observed to be generally efficient. Some improvements were recommended to overcome encountered problems.
