Abstract
The field experiment was conducted to compare the growth and yield parameters of two mungbean varieties: Pag-asa 7 (green variety) and Pag-asa 3 (yellow variety)under conventional and organically-based farming systems. Four fertilizers were applied: (a) pure organic ? Glyricidia sepium (b) pure organic carabao manure (c) pure inorganic ? complete fertilizer and (d) control ? no fertilizer. The experiment was laid out in Split Plot Randomized Complete Block Design. Between the two varieties, Pagasa 7 performed better than Pag-asa 3 and the difference was significant. The results revealed that conventional farming had the highest number of pods plant-1(20.50), number of pod cluster-1 (5.20), number of seed pod-1 (12.00), 100-seed weight (5.56 g) and seed yield (72.61 g). Organic farming treatment using Glyricidia sepium leaves had the highest plant height (100.15 cm), pod length (13.14 cm) and pod weight (13.28 g) and treatment using carabao manure had the highest germination rate (92.54 %) and number of cluster plant-1(4.35). Generally, this study concluded that growth and yield parameters of mung bean plants were most responsive under conventional treatment using commercially available complete fertilizer. In addition, conventional and organic farming systems differ significantly from each other notably in terms of the degree of their effect on mungbean growth and some soil properties.
