Abstract

The major practice was conducted at Caliraya Re-creation Center and Resort (CRC), Brgy. Lewin, Lumban, Laguna from April 30, 2012 to July 15, 2012. During the program, the student evaluated and actively participated in the various maintenance activities employed in the area such as mowing, watering, pruning, weeding and edging. Selection of native plants to the area, minimum usage of chemicals and utilization of all the resources in the resort make the site a low maintenance landscape. Bulk of the activities was devoted to mowing. Watering was minimal because rainfall supplied sufficient amount of water to the plants. Application of fertilizer was not recommended since the soil is rich in available macronutrients (N-P-K). Only one gardener handles the whole resort but other personnel can be involved in landscape maintenance to maximize their efficiency. The estimated cost of the maintenance operations was only Php 5, 849.00 per month (Php 0.30/m2). The site requires increase in budget to improve the appearance of the landscape. One should acquire supervisory skills and must have experience on actual field practice to be able to achieve low maintenance program without sacrificing the aesthetic and functionality of the landscape.
