Abstract

The biophysical, economic and socio-political constraints influencing the agroecosystems of the Dojoc Balite Pilot Resettlement Area (DBPRA) in Botolan, Zambales was documented and assessed to provide some appropriate strategies for the agricultural development of the area. A total of forty-one days was spent in the area to interview key informants, settlers and to apply some data collection techniques allied to participatory rural appraisal. Since 1992 up to the present, Dojoc Balite was the Pilot Resettlement Area of the Mt. Pinatubo victims from the five high-risk barangays (Batonlapoc, Carael, Tayaong, San Juan, and Tampo) in Botolan, Zambales. Among these five barangays, majority of the settlers came from San Juan, Botolan, Zambales. Most of the original settlers from these five barangays had already left Dojoc Balite. The combination of the relatives of original settlers and the new settlers had already occupied places in DBPRA On September 19, 2010, Aetas were officially relocated in the Botolan Farmers Association (BOFASS) houses situated at the DBPRA. The target families of BOFASS and the Company of the Daughters of Charity were 62 Aeta families. Of all the 62 Aeta families, only one fourth evacuated to Dojoc Balite and all other families were not willing to transfer. Present agricultural production in the area is limited by poor soil conditions, long dry season, and lack of livestock and planting materials of crops preferred by the settlers. Availability, accessibility and stability of food are therefore very low. Technological interventions and other development programs like Bio-Intensive Gardening (BIG), nursery establishment, bamboo plantation, backyard animal production, health center, improvement of the road network, revival of Laruan Gabay Aralan, livelihood projects, and registration of PAMANA-DB at the Security Exchange Commission (SEC) that could improve the productivity, stability and sustainability of the resettlement area were proposed. These recommendations were based on its relationships with current and planned development plans in the area. These recommendations must be done to achieve sustainability in the area.
