Abstract

The major farm practice was conducted in Barangay Dila, Bay, Laguna last July to September 2011. The study aimed to document farmer?s experiences during the conversion process from conventional to organic agriculture. With assistance from the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist, farmer respondents in Barangay Dila, Bay, Laguna adopted some organic agriculture (OA) practices in the hope of reducing production cost, protect the environment and health. Based on the survey, the organic practices adopted by farmers is spreading rice straw in the field instead of burning. The rice straw is sprayed with indigenous microorganism solution to facilitate rapid decomposition. In addition to rice straw as source of fertilizer, Puregenic®, a commercial foliar fertilizer is also being used. Since farmers are still in the transition stage of converting their farm to organic farm, the positive effects of their production practices are still not noticeable. Adoption of OA is slow due to the perception of the farmers that OA is labor intensive and time consuming. Moreover, programs of private companies in agriculture favors the conventional farming.
