Abstract

The research internship was conducted at the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), Los Baños, College, Laguna during the wet season of 2012, from May to October. The student participated int the whole operation of an experiment about integrated nutrient management research comparing soil-applies and foliar fertilizer, and their combinations. The experimental design used was RCBD with 5 treatments and 4 replicates. Inorganic soil-applied fertilizer was applied in three splits. The foliar fertilizers was first applied at 21 DAS and repeated every 10-14 days. Preliminary dataon plant height and tiller count were collected at 69 DAS. Statistical analysis using SAS 9 program was taught to the intern to analyze and interpret the preliminary data gathered. Based on the preliminary results, the plot applied with foliar fertilizer alone was similar to the control while the plots applied with inorganic fertilizer significantly had taller plant heights and more number tillers. The foliar fertilizers used did not contribute to the increase in plant height and tiller count at 69 DAS. Nevertheless, the yield data at the end of the experiment will still determine whether the foliar fertilizer really has beneficial effects on increasing plant growth and yield.
