Abstract
Greenhouse experiment was conducted at the University of the Philippines, Los Baños from October to November 2011 to study the stigma receptivity of selected thermosensitive genic male sterile (TGMS) lines. Stigma exsertion rate, panicle exsertion rate, plant height and tillering ability at maturity were also determined on selected TGMS lines. TGMS lines designated as TGMS 71, TGMS 72, TGMS 78, TGMS 131 and TGMS 132 and one pollen parent designated as SN 779 were used in the study. Stigma receptivity in selected thermosensitive genic male sterile (TGMS) lines was determined by counting the seed that set on spikelets pollinated at different times of pollination. All the TGMS lines tested showed the same behaviour in terms of percent seed set at different times of pollination except for TGMS 132. TGMS 132 showed a fluctuating trend because this line had partial sterility as observed from the pollen evaluation conducted. Among the TGMS lines tested, TGMS 131 performed the best in terms of seed setting rate. Thus, this TGMS line a potential material in developing TGMS based two line hybrids. There was significant difference in the percent seed set at different pollination times. Maximum percent seed set ranging from 28.03% to 38.59% was observed for TGMS plants pollinated a day after spikelet clipping until the 6th day but still high until the 3rd day after spikelet clipping. Thus, stigma was most receptive on the first three days after spikelet clipping. Significant amount of seeds were produced on the first four days after spikelet clipping and therefore is the best time to do controlled pollination. TMGS 78 had the maximum stigma exsertion rate indicating its advantage over the other TGMS lines used. This is because stigma exsertion has a great influence in outcrossing. On other hand, panicle exsertion rate for all the TGMS lines do not significantly differ. All the TGMS lines have the same behavior for this floral trait. Plant structure of all the TGMS lines used were under the semidwarf category (<110 cm). Tillering ability of all the TGMS lines tested on the other hand were under the medium category (10-19 tillers per plant).
