Abstract
This study investigated the chloride resistance of Type I and Type IP cement mortars in submerged condition using chloride ion concentration test. Cylindrical mortar specimens (100mm x200mm) were prepared using different water-cement ratios (0.55,0.60, and 0.65) and different curing periods (7 and 28 days). The specimens were exposed to cgloride attack by submersion to 3% sodium chloride (NaCI) solution for 30 and 60 days. At the end of the exposure, the chloride concentration at 0-25mm and 26-50mm depths were measured by titration with 0.1 M AgNO₃ solution.Results shows that Type IP cement mortars have lower chloride concentration than Type I cement mortars. this result was further enhanced by using longer period pozzolanic reaction that occured in Type IP cement mortars with longer curing period lead to the formation of calcium silicate hydrate (CHS) that eventually increased the resistance of the specimens against chloride attack. Lastly, lower water-cement ratios lead to lower chloride concentration for both Type I and IP cement mortar specimens which is consistent with the results from past related studies.
