Abstract
A field experiment was conducted to compare agronomic physiological, and yield parameters of IPB Var6, a white corn variety when grown under different fertilizer treatments. The study was conducted at the Central Experiment Station (CES), UPLB, College, Laguna from February to May 2012. Five fertilizer treatments were applied: (a) control ? no fertilizer; (b) pure inorganic- urea; (c) pure organic ?commercial organic fertilizer (COF); (d) organic + inorganic (basal) and, (e) organic + inorganic (side dress). The amount of urea (46-0-0) and COF (4.64-2.36-4.29) was computed based on the fertilizer recommendation for the area (160-0-0) and on the size of plot (five rows of 5m x 0.75 m). Among fertilizer treatments, pure inorganic fertilizer or urea (46-0-0) produced the highest yield and greatest effect on the different agronomic, physiological, and yield parameters such as plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area index (LAI), net assimilation rate (NAR), crop growth rate (CGR), total dry matter, ear length and 1000-seed weight of the IPB Var6. On other hand, parameters like harvest index, ear weight and ear diameter were highest in pure organic fertilizer treatment using COF. Combination of COF and urea applied basally was shown to match the effects of the sole application of either organic or inorganic fertilizers in most parameters while sidedressing of urea + COF had similar results as the control and therefore not recommended to use.
