Abstract

The major practice was conducted at the Market! Market! Mall Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City from April to May 2012. The complex covers 99,184 square meters including the playzone, central plaza, open parking, structure parking, new parking, and motor parking areas. Hands-on participation in the landscape maintenance operations such as watering, trimming and weeding was done, while operations like pruning, fertilizer and pesticide application were observed. During the practicum, problems in watering, pesticide application, maintenance of tools and equipment and the lack of record keeping were encountered. It was suggested that a systematic scheduling and record keeping of the various landscape activities on a daily or monthly basis, as well as identification and inventory of landscape plants be implemented In this way, the right information will serve as basis for sound decisions of the management. Another issue observed was littering. It was suggested that putting up of signages in strategic areas to serve as reminders to put their litter in trash bins. It will minimize the task of litter collection and workers could save time and could do other tasks instead. During pesticide spraying, it is also recommended that the workers use proper attire and personal protective equipment for their safety. A simple cost analysis of the landscape maintenance operations in the playzone area (170 square meters) was prepared. The estimated monthly cost of operation is Php 26,304.45 or Php 154.73 per square meter/per day. In essence, to maintain a quality landscape, various factors should be considered. These include the people, the landscape design and implementation, maintenance operations, softscapes & hardscapes, budget, tools and equipment, environment, record management and communication. If all these are in place and communicated effectively to people concerned, then problems could be minimized in maintaining a very good landscape.
