Abstract

The step-by-step postharvest procedures to ensure high-quality foundation seeds of glutinous corn, especially of the two newly-developed glutinous QPM OPVs, were documented with both description and footages. Special emphases were given on cob selection, use of tarpaulin sheets or metal cribs in drying, right moisture content for shelling (18-20%), slower sheller speed, diligence in grain cleaning and sorting, and chemical treatment. Based on the yield results of the 2011 wet season NCT trials, both IPB GlutQ-OB and IPBGlut-LB outyielded the check, IES Glut4. Hence, this variety can be considered as a better alternative to the check for glutinous-corn growing farmers. Comparing the two new glutinous-QPM OPVs with the old glutinous parental Los Baños Lagkitan would show that both new OPVs had clear advantage over the latter in terms of increase number of longer and bigger ears with larger grain size. In terms of grain chemical components, still the parental QPM variety, IPB Var6 expectedly had the highest contents of amylose, lysine, and tryptophan compared with the two new glutinous OPVs, while the other parent (Los Baños Lagkitan) exhibited the highest starch content. In view of this, population improvement in both the two new OPVs should be undertaken in order for them to be at par with the parentals with regards to those characters while maintaining yield superiority at the same time.
