Abstract
Electrocoagulation process was applied to slaughterhouse wastewater for the removal of TSS, color and COD. The effects of current and initial pH on the pollutants TSS, COD and color reduction were determined. The responses that were measured were the residual concentrations and removal efficiencies of TSS, color reduction were determined. The responses that were measured were the residual concentrations and removal of TSS, color, and COD. Only the initial pH was shown to be significant while operating current was not. Non-significance of current may be attributed to high intervals for operating current, and the choice of operating time of two hours. It was observed that for all responses, the leveling off to maximum removal efficiencies occurred when time reached 30 minutes. The highest TSS reduction efficiency at 30 minutes was equal to 99.23% at its unadjusted initial pH and an operating current of 0.3A. The corresponding maximum color reduction efficiency is at 95.60%, also obtained at the same pH and current. COD reduction of 87.46% was attained at two hours at an operating current of 0.3 A at its unadjusted pH. The residual pollutant concentration passed benchmark concentration set by DENR Administrative Order No.35. Based on preliminary cost calculations, the electrical power requirement for electrocoagulation for this wastewater was 8.57kW/m³ and the corresponding treatment cost was 91.24OhP/m³
