Abstract

The synthesis of one-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials has of great value due to their high surface area and low dimensionality. In this study, C60 fullrene nanofibers (FNF) were fabrictaed using liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation technique with N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone as good solvent instead of the typical toluene. This method is promising because it produced thin and needle like nanostructures even at ambient temperature and pressure and without the aid of template. The sonication time and heating temperature were varied to dtermine the optimum conditions that would produce uniform nanofibers with high surface area and high length-to-width aspect ratio. The optical microscope images of the samples reveal that the aspect ratio of the FNFs is reduced when hated beyond 40 degrees C. The Fourier transform infrared spectra of the FNFs show the presence of the C60 molecules in sample. The downshift of the characteristics peaks of C60 in the spectra is due to the polymerization of the anisotropic C60 to form the 1D structure. The thermo-gravimetric curve of the FNF shows that it has a decomposition temperature of 446 degrees C, which is signficantly higher as compared to pristine C60. The findings suggest that the synthesized FNF has great advantages as compared to pristine C60 due to its desirable morphology and high thermal stability.
