Abstract

Flooding is a big problem whenever tropical storm arrives in MAnito, Albay. It was seen that different factors such as kaingin, deforestation, erosion and sedimentation that can increase the incidence of flooding are present in the area. Typhoon Reming which, can be classified as 100-year rainfall event, holds the record of highest amount of rainfall from year 2006 up to present and has caused a lot of damage to Manito, Albay. Using HEC-RAS and GIS, vulnerability of Manito to flooding was studied in detail. Two conditions were simulated. First id flooding from a 100-year rainfall event using the present characteristics of the watershed and second is using the watershed that has an improved forest cover. Maps were generated for each condition showing the extent and depth of flooding. The generated map for the existing condition was able to capture the degree of flooding that was experienced during typhoon Reming. However, the extent of flooding for the simulated improved watershed did not differ much, although it was able to reduce the peak flow from 222.32m³ to 153.06m³. The study showed that the cross-section of the river is very small for a 100-year rainfall event, such that even with the improvement of the watershed flooding will not be significantly reduced. The study also showed that Manito is highly vulnerable to flooding for the intensity of rainfall.
