Abstract
The author analyzed the expected pedestrian LOS of a proposed footbridge for Two Shopping Center in Pasay City, considering the effect of the mall's opening on the existing pedestrian LOS in the local area. The author quantified two parameters: pedestrian count and pedestrian speed. The pedestrian count was obtained for a given duration of time, over the 2m design footbridge width to determine flow. Three trials were done for this procedure. The time it took for three volunteers to traverse a 5.08m (200in)walkway were recorded to compute the corresponding pedestrian speeds. Three trials were done per volunteer, and the average was taken to obtain the mean pedestrian speed. The two said parameters were used to compute for the pedestrian density and spacing, which are reciprocals of each other. The initials pedestrian LOS was determined based on the computed spacing and was compared to the threshold values for pedestrian LOS based on the HCM 200 standard, leading to pedestrian LOS A. By applying a 130% increase on the pedestrian count as suggested by Langford (2001) due to an anticipated increase on pedestrian shoppers attracted by the mall opening, the parameters for LOS determination were recomputed. The expected LOS upon mall opening was then degraded into pedestrian LOS C. From this, the author has determined that the 2m design width has passed both the HCM 2000 and the International Federation for Structural Concrete of 2005's guidelines for the design of footbridges. This is because it has met at least the "fair" and "adequate" ratings-meaning, it is capable of providing sufficient space for the pedestrians to select normal walking speeds, and it could serve the local area's pedestrian flow conditions, respectively.
