Abstract

Indo Phil textile Mills, Inc. (IPTMI) is the largest yarn manufacturer in the country. The products include yarns made from different materials which are available in various counts. The company has three mills and Mill 1 was chosen to be the focus of the study. It was observed that among the five production lines in Mill !, the 30 combed Cotton/Polyester (PC) blend contributed to 80.5% of the reject observed. Furthermore, it was observed that the 30PC production line incurred a 1.7954% rejection rate, equivalent to 1,658,377.46 PhP per year. It was identified that the stitch and type of defect contributed to 86.3% of the reject type in the 30PC line. Solutions derived from the root-cause analysis for the two defect included the inclusion of practical training, implementation of periodic checking of the yarn splicer and the yarn guide per drum, a stepping board to aid in the proper attachment of paper cones to the machine's package cradle, using gloves, using a light-shirt type coat, regular replacement of the yarn splicer and tension control knobs, sharing monitoring responsibility between the Winding and conditioning section, placing labels on bobbin tray, and installation of plastic curtains at the entrance and exit of the winding section. Implementing the recommendations will result to a reduction of the rejection rate to 0.518% and 1,091,963.36 PhP annual savings for the company.
