Abstract

A Reynold's apparatus was designed and fabricated to observed the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of flow that Reynolds discovered in 1880. The three flow regimes-laminar, transition and turbulent flow regime can be observed at different Reynolds' number, a dimensionless number expressed as the ratio of inertial forces to the viscous forces. The fabrication f the Reynold's apparatus was based on the experiments done by the students using existing Reynold's apparatus designed by Manuzon. The main improvements such as the table top design, the flanged acrylic tube, the use of orifice meter and U-tube manometer and the more stable dye ejector, considered the sources of error and problems encountered in doing the experiment. This study confirmed the presence and the characteristics of the fluid regimes. Data gathered showed that the minimum and maximum Reynold's number the apparatus can attain is at 1142.81 and 4426.08, respectively for the highest temperature obtained at 31ºC . At the same condition, the transitional flow occurred at Reynold's number from 2555.40 50 3958.81.
