Abstract

The practicum was conducted at Asia Paper Industrial Corporation (APIC) located at Governor's Drive, Brgy. CAbuco, Trece Martires City, Cavite. The training had total of 240working hours, from the 18ᵗʰ of April to the 27ᵗʰ of May 2011. APIC is a recycled paper-based paper manufacturing company that produces quality bond and book paper. Analyses of the wastepaper from Maruzen and Seaside were conducted as special topic. High values of ash content, related to the amount of additives present in both samples, were obtained. These wastepaper are difficult to disintegrate thus were subjected to pretreatment and beating the PFI mill. Maruzen disintegrated without pretreatment. Seaside disintegrated with the use of 25mL of sodium hypochlorite. Maruzen wastepaper needed 1500 PFI revolutions to attain to 250mL CSF. Seaside wastepaper required 2000 PFI revolutions to get 284mL CSF. Handsheets were made from unbeaten and beaten pulp to final CSF and tested for physical properties such as basis weight, thickness, density, burst index, tear index, tensile index, and folding endurance, based on the standards from the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI). The physical properties of the handsheets from both Maruzen and Seaside increased when beaten up to the desired CSF value. Maruzen needs to the further beaten to prevent clogging problems in APIC Seaside needs to be pretreated and has a higher degree of beating to improve the pulp quality.
