Abstract

A sugarcane juice extractor was evaluated to determine the combination of pulley speed and top roller height adjustment that will yield optimum extraction efficiency and throughput capacity using SPV 422 as feedstock. SPV 422 stalk samples were subjected to UTM evaluation and forces at points of compressive failure which also led to the identification of the clearances that will produce such forces were identified. Statistical analysis showed that the response surface for extraction efficiency and throughput analysis were saddle. This means that there is no unique combinations of each factor that will yield an optimum response. Based on the results obtained, extraction efficiency is not related with throughput capacity. In other words, the two responses do not have a point of common optimality. Based on the results of ridge analysis and further iterations, it was found out that the factor combination for optimum extraction efficiency of 79.0648% is at pulley speed of 408.829rpm and top roller height at 1.6mm while the factor combination for optimum throughput capacity of 55.3529kg/h is at pulley of 501.97rpm and top roller height of 1.6mm.
