Abstract
The study developed a simplified set-up of Concrete Impermeability Apparatus (CI apparatus) to measure water penetration depth in concrete. Permeability of concrete is a function of depth of water penetration. Permeability characterizes the ease of passing of fluid into and through the concrete under a pressure differential. Identical concrete specimens were tested using the simplified set-up and the CI apparatus. The average depth of water penetration in concrete specimens tested using the CI apparatus is 63.37mm while 49.56mm using the simplified set-up. Results showed that depth of penetration of water in concrete tested the CI apparatus is higher compared to the specimens tested using the simplified set-up. The difference in test results is attributed to the difference in pressure used. Lower pressure was utilized in the set-up. Hydration is also a factor the duration of water pressure exposure of concrete specimens tested under the set-up is longer. hence, the specimens tested were more hydrated. The study was able to provide a simplified set-up in which the resulting water penetration front is the same with the acceptable waterfronts However, the duration of the test is still subject to validation since the resulting depth of water penetration of the set-up is lower compared to CI Apparatus. Once the duration of the test is verified, the advantages of using the set-up include its low cost, flexible size of test area, and its simplicity.
