Abstract

The construction elevators play an important role in the construction of high-rise buildings. They are used for efficient transporting of people and materials and reduce transport and travel time through different floors. In a high0rise construction, fast and efficient transportation within the structure is vital for the timely completion of the project. By studying and quantifying the arrival patterns of construction elevator passengers during peak hours, this study would help improve the level of service of the said transportation. In addition, determining the reasonable number of construction elevators to be utilized in the project would help minimize queuing and reduce idle time for workers. The project in consideration for this study is the Mercury Drug Corporation (MDC) 100 building. In case of MDC-100, long queuing for the service of construction elevators is a common sight especially during peak hours. Evaluation of the performance of the elevators was done by simulating the construction elevator system. The data on the inter-arrival time o9f passengers were gathered during a three-day observation period and were converted into a single-user data for simulation. Simulation of 27 scenarios with varying number of construction elevators and varying inter-arrival time data based on peak hours was done for five repetitions to obtained data on the average waiting time and longest of queue for each scenario. These data, as well as the construction elevator operation costs, were the basis in evaluating the construction elevator performance. Morning peak hours produce the longest length of queue while noon peak hours produce the longest waiting time. On the other hand, afternoon peak hours have the shortest queue length and waiting time. Based on the number of elevators, using three construction elevators provides a far better level of service than using two construction elevators. On the other hand, the performance of the using two construction elevators is almost the same as that of using one construction elevator. This behaviour may be an effect of initial transient in a simulation. However, using two construction elevators provides contingency during emergencies. long waiting time and queue length affect worker's break time and daily productivity and the project's construction schedule.
