Abstract

Curtain wall system is an exterior cladding supported by the structural frame of a building and carries no other loads besides its weight and wind loads. It brings about many benefits such as providing aesthetics, withstanding structural deflections, and minimizing the effects of solar radiation. The main objective of this study is to investigate the mechanism of having a curtain wall system installed as a significant part of a green building. Specifucally,it aims to;first, explain the procedures of the installation of the curtain wall system and tests for its efficiency as used in Zuellig Building;second, identify the components of a curtain wall system, and its contribution to its thermal performance byobtaining thermal parameters using WINDOW 6 and third, analyze the flow of heat within the curtain wall system using THERM 6. It was found in this study that the curtain system is installed in the project site using a monorail and a chain hoist which were then controlled and managed by different workers who have their designated tasks and positions. Inspections and efficiency tests such as flood tests were done to ensure its proficient installation. Also, this study discussed on the different components that acurtain wall system possesses enabling it to control the light and heat entering the structure. These components are, but not limited to, the number of glasses, thickness of glass, the application of coatings, cavity widths, and gas filled at spaces, and usage of ceramic frits. Each contributed to the improvement of the thermal performance of the glazing system It was shown in this study that different combinations of these components led to the improvement in the thermal performance of the curtain wall system.
