Abstract

A transformer is a device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through inductively coupled conductors which makes the stepping-up and stepping-down of voltages possible. Overhead transformers are the most commonly used type in distribution systems. Different aspects such as application type, power factor, diversity factor, demand factor, nominal voltage and percent loading are considered by the Meralco design department to calculate for the kVA rating of a transformer to be installed for new and existing service applications.Commercial applications use three-phase power in their operation. Three-phase transformers, which can be single unit three-phase transformer or a bank of single-phase transformers, were also discussed. Meralco uses transformer banks in providing three-phase power. Loading on installed transformer requires the computation of the transformer's main and wing loadings depending on the configuration of the transformer bank. Design calculations and solutions on such applications were also discussed and analyzed.
