Abstract

The study was conducted to determine the effect of the coping mechanisms with La Niña phenomenon in Calamba, Laguna to their total rice production and profitability. Its specific objectives were to: a) determine the adverse effects of La Niña phenomenon to the palay farms; b) identify and describe the palay farmers’ coping mechanisms with La Niña phenomenon in the study area; c) assess the effects of these coping mechanisms employed by palay farmers to their total rice production; d) identify the other factors that affect the total rice production of farmers; e) assess the effects of the coping mechanisms employed by palay farmers to their net returns; and f) to recommend policy measures that could help rice farmers lessen the impacts of the La Niña phenomenon. Primary data from all the rice farmer-borrowers of the Calamba Rice Growers Multi-Purpose Cooperative (CRG-MPC) were subjected to descriptive, Chi-Square and multiple regression analyses. The most dominant coping mechanism of the farmer-respondents was changing the planting calendar hence the farmers were grouped into two: those who coped by changing their planting calendar and those who did not. Results showed that CRG-MPC loan had no significant effect on the coping mechanism of the farmer-borrowers to La Niña phenomenon. However, the net farm income of farmers who adjusted their planting calendar was higher than the net farm income of the farmers who did not adjust their planting calendar for both seasons.Total costs were higher for the farmers who changed their planting calendar during the wet season and were lower during the dry season. Productivity and prices received where higher during the dry season. Furthermore, the partial budget analysis showed that there was a reduction in the net income received by farmers who changed their planting calendar during the wet season. On the contrary, for the dry season, an increase in income was noted for those who changed their planting calendar. The amount of loan from the cooperative and the Palay Check System was found to be significant in increasing total rice production during the wet season. As in the wet season, during the dry season, the amount of loan from the cooperative was found to be significant as well as the employment of the coping mechanism in increasing the total rice production of farmers. For both seasons only age and educational attainment significantly affected the net farm income of the farmers. The following were recommended: a) continued provision of loans; b) conduct of more training on how to reduce the cost of production; and c) practice the change of planting calendar.
