Abstract

The effect of photocatalytic conditions such as typeof immobilizing material for the photocatalyst (TiO2), the photocatalyst dose (mass per unit amount of immobilizing material), and type of light exposure (sunlight or ultraviolet light) on the removal of both COD and color in combined biodiesel-production wastewater was investigated. Different media such as lahar, flat galvanized iron sheet, corrugated galvanized iron sheet and glass were used for immobilization of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) of varying concentrations. In terms of % COD reduction, lahar with a photocatalyst dose of0.18g TiO₂/g lahar was found to be the best immobilization medium with an average removal efficiency of 25.4± 1.0%. Sunlight or ultraviolet light exposure during photocatalytic treatment did not give statistically significant differences ( α-0.05) in COD reduction and decolorization. Kinetic analysis of the photocatalysis reaction of the best immobilization medium showed that it followed second order kinetics with rate constants of 0.0006 L/mg h (for sunlight exposure) and 0.0004 L/mg h ( for ultraviolet light exposure). Results showed the applicability of photocatalysis as wastewater treatment for combined wastewater.
