Abstract

Samsung Electronics Philippines MAnufacturing Corporation, a plant located in Calamba Premiere International Park (CPIP), Batino, Calamba City, is devoted to the assembly of optical disk drives. The plant has three main categories of products: Slim, Ultra-Slim, and Half-height. This study focuses on the last category. The assembly line of this category faced a shortage of capacity because of the increasing trend of demand. Root causes of the capacity problem were determined through the use if Ishikawa Diagram. It was determined that most of the problems were caused by bottlenecks and capacity constraint resources. There were two time horizons being considered, the short-term and intermediate-range. Recommendations for each of the time horizons were made. For the immediate time horizon, three alternatives were given-level, overtime and additional line strategy. In the end, the overtime strategy was chosen. For the short-term horizon, modification in the methods and/or work area at formulated. Each of the bottlenecks and capacity constraint resources were given with alternatives, solutions were selected from them. The cost of the improvements is Php121,542.50. If the improvements are not implemented, the company would spend Php1, 328,640: thus, making a savings of Php1,207,097.50.
